🍫 Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata)
Looking for something a little unusual and totally charming? Meet the Chocolate Vine—a vigorous climbing vine that’s as beautiful as it is unique!
-
Growth & Size: Fast-growing twining vine that can stretch 15–30 feet long, perfect for covering arbors, fences, or trellises.
-
Light Needs: Thrives in full sun to part shade (flowers best with more sun).
-
Flowers: In spring, you’ll get clusters of deep purple-maroon blooms that smell faintly of rich chocolate or vanilla—yes, really! 🌸🍫
-
Fruit: In warm climates, especially with two plants for cross-pollination, it may produce unusual sausage-shaped purple fruits in late summer to fall. Inside is a sweet, edible pulp.
-
Extras: Semi-evergreen in mild winters, deciduous where it gets cold. Easy to grow and low-maintenance once established.
This is one of those “show-off” plants that gets people talking—because who doesn’t want a vine that smells like dessert?
